Don Jazzy and DBanj

Don Jazzy and DBanj

They were excitedly the happiest men on planet earth when American music superstar,Kanye West signed them into his G.O.O.D Music.

The Nigerian entertainment industry and music pundits within and outside Nigeria celebrated with them…but little did they know that their new union would crumble the rosy relationship that has existed between them over the years.

This is the story of a successful and awards winning entertainer,Dapo Oyebanjo popularly known as D’Banj and his long-time friend and producer,Micheal Collins Ajereh, better known as Don Jazzy, both founders of renowned Mo’hits crew.

When the news of the duo’s possible break-up came up last week,it became worrisome to some pundits, especially their fans, seeing the two closest friends finally parting-ways,while others believe that it might be a publicity stunt designed to achieve a targeted goal. They described D’Banj and Don Jazzy as “ joint product” that cannot be separated for whatever interest.

Sources revealed that D’Banj was becoming too arrogant to everybody including Don-Jazzy, and efforts to curb him had been difficult.

Coming out to lay the rumour to rest was Don Jazzy. He took to his twitter page and tweeted, “Good day friends. So sorry I have been away for long as I have been going through some changes in my life.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the end of a long Era and the beginning of a new One

Some of the Rumours you have all heard recently are sad but true. The way forward now is to make sure I keep bringing you guys more of the beautiful music you all love to dance to.

And to end d old era, I will be donating the proceeds of my production catalogue from day one till date to five charity organizations. Thanks. IDJA

There have been quite a lot of speculations on what could have led to their disagreement.

In this report, Nigeriafilms.com gives you a detailed account of the fight between the two.

D’BANJ’S ATTITUDE PROBLEM

D’Banj’s egocentric attitude,we gathered is one of the reasons the duo fell apart.

According to information reaching us,D’Banj has been acting funny lately and always disregards any decision made by Don Jazzy and any other Mo Hits Crew concerning how they run the company.

D’Banj is naturally one person that is egocentric but one person he respects a lot is Don Jazzy. He has always been the face of the brand because Don Jazzy is more preoccupied with technical work but of late he doesn’t even regard Don Jazzy anymore. This is because they have been having issues. There was even a time he told Don Jazzy that without him, there will be no Mo’Hits Records.

No one can really tell what has got into him but the fact remains that he has allowed certain things to get to him which has obviously affected his relationship with Don Jazzy.

MONEY

There has been a sharing formula on whatever D’Banj makes as an artiste.A certain percentage is expected to be remitted to Mo’Hits account from any show and endorsement deal any artiste on the label gets.

Don Jazzy, being the producer makes no money from shows and hardly produce any other artiste, but lives on the money the artistes make from shows because he is the President of Mo Hits.

The issue of money started about 4 years ago when D’Banj got the Globacom Endorsement deal.D’Banj is said to have refused to remit the company’s percentage and based on the fact that there is no written agreement between them Don Jazzy could not question his decision.

There are too many issues to start talking about how money got in between them. Most notable ones are the Globacom deal and Presidential election campaign deal.

Remember Don Jazzy said it clear on Twitter that he never collected any money from the president.Though D’Banj has been the one financing most of their projects but it is believed that he should be remitting certain back to run the company.

D’BANJ’S MOTHER’S INFLUENCE

D’Banj’s mother is one person that has been the backbone of Mo Hits record from the outset.

For certain reasons, sources disclosed, she got displeased with Don Jazzy and other members of Mo’Hits Record allegedly encouraging D’Banj to move on without them.

D’Banj’s mother,we learnt has been the one in control of their activities lately and is not in any way pleased with what he gives back to the label having been the one making all the money.

KANYE WEST DEAL

The deal between MoHIts records and G.O.O.D music owned by American Rapper,Kanye West,is one of the best things to ever happen to the Nigerian music industry. While many people celebrated the deal, little did they know it will eventually cause a rift between them.

Details of what went wrong is yet to be ascertained but our source alleged that “Don Jazzy was more favoured in the deal than D’Banj.

Don Jazzy, reports say,has already produced a track for Good Music.

DON JAZZY’S FUEL SUBSIDY REACTION

During the removal of fuel subsidy protest in Lagos,Don Jazzy made a comment on Twitter disregarding the action of the president to have increased fuel price.

He also noted that he never collected any money for the presidential campaign done by D’Banj in 2011.

The statement,we gathered got D’Banj very upset and cause a big rift between them.

CHOICE OF BANKULI OVER SUNDAY ARE AS MANAGER

Sunday Are the CEO of List Entertainment has been the manager of D’Banj for years and he also runs the management company for MoHits record.

Sometimes in 2009,Bankuli who has been their close friend for many years came into the picture and rather than refer to Sunday Are as his manager,he started associating more with Bankuli.

Late last year,he made it known that he wanted to have a change of manager and chose Bankuli, but Don Jazzy disagreed and decided to keep Sunday Are as the manager of MohIts Records.

Right now Bankuli has taken over the management of D’Banj while Sunday Are remains the manager of other Mo’Hits artistes.

WANDE COAL’S ALBUM DELAY

The delay of the release of Wande Coal’s album, sources disclosed, was initiated by D’Banj.

Just like he delayed the release of his first album M2M for his last album,D’Banj, insiders disclosed intends not to have Wande release any album until he releases his own.

After much pressure on Don Jazzy to release Wande Coal’s album,he dropped three singles which D’Banj according to sources was not happy about.

Wande has always been a threat to D’Banj and he believes Don Jazzy should put more energy on his own work rather than Wande or any other artiste on Mo’Hits.

That Don Jazzy released three singles from Wande’s forthcoming album may have been the final straw that broke the camel’s back and that is one big reason they fell apart.

Mystikal

Mystikal

A six-year prison sentence is no doubt derailing, but keeping a cool head has gotten Mystikal back on track, with a new record deal and album coming out on Cash Money Records.

“For six years, I was looking up. The only people that were under me were people that were deceased — that’s kind of how you feel,” the fiery New Orleans MC told “RapFix Live” host Sway Calloway on the show Wednesday (March 14). “To come home and be with the #1 rap label? Come on.”

Mystikal describes the experience as humbling. His “Original” music video, featuring Lil Wayne and Birdman, has already clocked in more than 6 million views on WorldStarHipHop.

In 2004, the former No Limit Records star went to prison on charges of sexual battery, extortion and failing to file tax returns. He was released in 2010, and though he has been working on music ever since, his biggest news came in December when he officially announced his signing to Cash Money.

Going from behind bars to spitting bars alongside Lil Wayne is quite a feat. “The hardest part was making the transition from everything that I was doing to everything that I was able to do,” the Tarantula said of his adjustment from rap star to inmate. “I kinda disconnected from the hip-hop scene, ’cause that was painful, man. To look at TV, like, I wasn’t on there.”

One of the rappers he would constantly see on the television: Weezy, of course. “That was one you couldn’t avoid, that whole camp and Drake and Nicki,” he said. “And the whole time, working it out like, ‘That’s where I’m going anyway.’ ”

Ja Rule

Ja Rule

Ja Rule fans may have enjoyed last week’s radio interview from behind bars on Sirius XM, but the Department of Corrections did not. Last week, on his birthday (February 29) Ja called into Renada Romain’s Ear Candy Morningsshow on Hip Hop Nation and spoke on his current incarceration, his Pray For the Day charity and his new Pain is Love 2, but on Tuesday (March 6), the multiplatinum rap star faced a disciplinary hearing over the phone interview.

A representative from New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision told MTV News that Rule, who is serving a two-year sentence at Mid-State Correctional Facility for tax evasion and gun possession, had a disciplinary hearing Tuesday and it was determined that the rapper made an unauthorized phone call. His punishment: a seven-day work detail.

Rule’s publicist Melanie Bonvicino maintains that Rule has been a model prisoner. He has recently obtained his GED and started taking college courses two weeks ago. Bonvicino believes that it was another interview with the New York Daily News, in which Ja dished on his relationship with former New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi and former Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski, that angered prison officials at Mid-State.

“That sort of created this issue with the powers that be at the facility because after that, they refused all interviews for him,” she told MTV News.

Bonvicino was concerned whether the infraction would have any bearing on the “Put It on Me” rapper’s expected February 2013 release date; as of now, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Still, team Rule insists that they aren’t making any changes to how they handle Ja and the media. “There will be no changes at this time, we had a record coming out, and Ja Rule obviously is really all about his fans and as such it was his birthday and we had a record to promote, so this is his usual here,” she said.

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj

ORLANDO, Florida — Who says divas have to be difficult? After her performance at the start of the NBA’s 2012 All-Star Game on Sunday, Nicki Minaj graciously invited MTV News into her dressing room before she even got a chance to catch her breath. Once inside, the reigning rap queen spoke on balancing her pop status with her hip-hop background and used her recent Grammy performance to contextualize things.

“That’s just who I am. I was a theater major; I studied theater,” Nicki Minaj told MTV News. “It’s funny because, even with the Grammys, that wasn’t the first time I’ve done theater. Like ‘Moment 4 Life,’ I did a skit I was pretending to be an old lady, Martha, when I did ‘Right Thru Me,’ I did a skit. I always try to do that when I have the forum to do it.”

Before she took the stage to perform “Roman Holiday” at the 2012 Grammy Awards ceremony, Nicki prefaced her stage show with the “Exorcism of Roman” mini-movie. Her recent theatrics, which have drawn a ton of criticism, aren’t a far cry from the skits that appeared in her “Moment 4 Life” and “Right Thru Me” videos.

Nicki may have started out a rapper, but she has grown to be so much more. A number of her recently released songs, which are being used to set up her sophomore Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, have been pop affairs. From the RedOne-produced “Starships” to “Roman Holiday,” there will be songs that will exist outside of the canon of traditional hip-hop. However, Nicki’s recently released “Roman Reloaded” single featuring Lil Wayne proves that she can still spit bars with the best of them. (After all, she did rank #4 on MTV News’ “Hottest MCs in the Game” list.) Still, Nicki insists that she is merely being herself.

“I guess I am pop culture just because what I’m doing seems to be popular. When people want to do what you’re doing, it’s kinda popular,” she reasoned. “I don’t ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it. It’s not about black or white; I think it’s just a statement. It doesn’t matter which color you are; it’s just a statement of being fearless.”

Being fearless is also about knowing when to cut an interview short. “OK, bye, y’all. Get out of my dressing room,” Nicki joked.

Davy Jones

Davy Jones

Davy Jones, lead singer of 1960s made-for-TV pop group the Monkees, died Wednesday (February 29) at age 66. According to TMZ, Jones died of a heart attack at his home in Florida.

The baby-faced singer born David Thomas Jones in Manchester, England, on December 30, 1945, began his career as a child actor, appearing in a British daytime soap opera and radio plays and taking a brief detour into being a horse jockey before landing a Tony nomination at age 16 for his role as the Artful Dodger in a Broadway production of “Oliver!” (In a rock and roll footnote, glam-rock icon David Bowie adopted his stage name after worrying that his birth name, David Jones, would cause confusion with the then emerging stage star and future Monkees singer.)

In an ironic twist of fate given his future stardom, he appeared alongside his “Oliver!” castmates on the December 1964 episode of “The Ed Sullivan Show” that featured the legendary American TV debut of the Beatles.

He launched a solo recording career in 1965, the same year he was chosen to fill out the cast of the TV musical sitcom that would launch him to global fame. The group was put together by producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, who were inspired by “A Hard Day’s Night” to assemble a Beatles-like band to provide the face for their slapstick series. He appeared alongside American musicians Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, providing lead vocals for many of the band’s most iconic tunes, including “Daydream Believer,” “Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)” and “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You.”

The group’s run on TV lasted from 1966 to 1968, and though the bandmembers initially were barred by producers from writing and performing their own music, as time went on, they took over more of the musical reins and the songs took on an increasingly psychedelic tone. Along the way, they scored hits such as “Last Train to Clarksville,” “I’m a Believer” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” with each bandmember contributing vocals but Jones emerging as the “cute one” and de facto maracas-shaking frontman alongside drummer Dolenz.

With wacky premises that presaged the music-video boom of the 1980s, the show was a hit and the band went on tour, eventually breaking from the show’s musical producer, Don Kirshner, to explore increasingly esoteric sounds. The show was canceled in 1968, and Jones appeared alongside his bandmates in the trippy feature-film flop “Head,” which was co-written by then-unknown actor Jack Nicholson.

The “Pre-Fab Four” limped along for several more years, but after the loss of Tork and Nesmith, Dolenz and Jones were left to tour as a duo for much of the 1970s. The bandmates would continue to reunite in spurts — with the exception of Nesmith — and in 1986, MTV helped revive interest in the group with Monkees marathons that rebooted interest and once again sent Jones back on the road.

Jones continued to tour and perform on TV and in films throughout the 1980s and ’90s, appearing on “My Two Dads,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” releasing his final album, the cover LP She, in 2009.

Jones was slated to mount a U.K. tour in honor of the group’s 45th anniversary in May along with Tork and Dolenz.

Oscars 2012

Oscars 2012

There was a wardrobe malfunction, some racy fashion, a bit of onstage inebriation, a little pre-show punking and even a Justin Bieber sighting … and none of it was enough to spare Sunday’s 84th Academy Awards from being called “as bland as oatmeal” and a “badly paced bore-fest.”

Those criticisms may or may not have been deserved; after all, the three-hour-and-something telecast certainly lagged in spots, most of Billy Crystal’s shtick seemed to have been vacuum-sealed during the latter days of the Carter administration and the most memorable moments centered on supposed nipple sips and Angelina Jolie’s right leg. And, shoot, it’s not like there was a whole lot of suspense involved with the show itself; everyone knew “The Artist” was a lock to win Best Picture, and, lo and behold, it did just that.

Still, there were highlights— Emma Stone’s charming (and well-written) presentation bit opposite Ben Stiller, Octavia Spencer’s gob-smacked Best Supporting Actor acceptance speech (and frequent near spills beforehand), Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis’ cymbal-smashing stunt — but overall, consensus seems to hold that this year’s Oscar telecast was too bloated, too straight-laced and too self-reverent. In other words, it was just like every other Oscar telecast, only with accidental nudity and some Cirque du Soleil thrown in at the last minute.

Which is why, after sifting through the aftermath of the show itself, I can’t help but notice the similarities between the Oscars and the 54th Grammy Awards, which unspooled earlier this month and were greeted with the same basic criticisms immediately afterward: feckless host, lifeless pacing, predictable results. And while comparing Billy Crystal to LL Cool J is basically a futile endeavor (Crystal was funnier, but LL bested him when it came to prayer-leading and headwear), it’s not exactly a stretch to call both telecasts long-winded, or make the connection between “The Artist” and Adele.

Of course, some (like, uh, me) have already floated the notion that the Oscars and the Grammys are basically the same show anyway — both are slightly silly, thoroughly incomprehensible exercises in self congratulation — though, for what it’s worth, I actually enjoyed Sunday’s Oscars way more than this year’s Grammys. I thought the former was a better show, more creatively staged, and certainly more adept playing the hand it was dealt.

To wit: Producers went into Sunday’s Oscarcast having already weathered the Brett Ratner/Eddie Murphy bad-press fiesta, and knowing that a) this year’s crop of nominated-films weren’t exactly compelling, b) a (largely) silent, black-and-white film was the odds-on favorite, c) their host was born in 1948, and d)

they were opposite the NBA All-Star Game. Forget about “cool” … about the best thing the Oscars could hope for was “classy,” and in that regard, they definitely delivered.

On the other hand, heading into the Grammys, the presumptive favorite had also sold nearly 7 million albums (about as close as a consensus as you can get these days), one of the most-popular hip-hop artists on the planet was the night’s most-nominated act (that would be Kanye West), and three of the world’s biggest pop stars (Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Rihanna) were all in attendance. Oh, and then, on the night before the show itself, Whitney Houston — one of the greatest singers of all time, and a talent whose entire career was basically interwoven with the history of the award

unexpectedly died. If anything, the show was set up to be one for the ages.

And yet, it largely wasn’t. Sure, Adele soared and scored, but everyone else in the previous paragraph was basically an afterthought. And the tribute to Houston, featuring a very game Jennifer Hudson, was buried in the telecast and largely forgotten by the following morning. Combine all that with an odd Nicki Minaj performance, that whole “EDM” tribute and a thorough bungling of the annual “In Memoriam” piece, and the Grammys were a debacle in just about every conceivable way (except for Dave Grohl, of course, who was awesome as always).

So if these two awards shows really are so similar, well, for one year at least, they weren’t. The Oscars definitely out-gunned, out-shone, and even managed to out-Grammy the Grammys themselves. There was a slight spirit of irreverence (Angelina’s leg show, Sacha Baron Cohen’s ash-spilling stunt, the boozy “Bridesmaids” salute to Marty Scorsese) that permeated throughout the buttoned-up proceedings. They even got Justin Bieber involved, and the last time I checked, he was a musician (or at least that’s what people tell me). Both certainly warranted criticisms, though perhaps that’s just the case with all awards shows these days: They are largely antithetical to the way we operate, after all: throwback, three-hour telecasts where brevity is encouraged but never really enforced. They are practically constructed to be deconstructed by bloggers the following morning, painfully un-hip, unapologetically huge and forced to appeal to the broadest of demographics. And yet (or probably because of all that), they routinely deliver viewership — this year’s Grammys were watched by 39 million folks, the largest audience since 1984 — which means they’re not going anywhere anytime soon … if ever.

So if we’re stuck with them, we might as well come to appreciate them. Neither the Oscars nor the Grammys are ever going to be perfect … and this year, neither were. But when comparison is necessary (and given the scope of both, basically unavoidable), the Oscars came out on top, by a large margin. They did more with less, and did so with style to spare. And less Nicki Minaj. Then again, perhaps all of this just begs a larger question: Wouldn’t it be nice if there were some alternatives out there? I wouldn’t hold my breath for an answer, so in the mean time, I’m left to compare one bloviated, bloated awards show to another, even if they don’t even merit comparison.

What awards show did you enjoy more this year: the Grammys or the Oscars? Leave your comment below!

The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Keep it locked at MTV.com for updates on the night’s big winners and the best red-carpet fashion.

Sonia gives Davido a kiss for us to see…

DEVELOPING STORY: Nigeria’s newest pop sensation Davido might have bitten more than he can chew when he hooked up with an undergraduate on a trip to Ghana yesterday.

Barely 24 hours since he arrived in Ghana, there’s been a leak; with very private pictures of him in bed with an unnamed lady emerging on Blackberry Messenger and Twitter.

It’s gone viral already, just like it was with the Wande Coal nude photo leak.  Just this morning Davido, 19, trended worldwide on Twitter; with thousands commenting on the pictures showing him in bed with a lady believed to be an 18-year-old undergraduate called Sonia Jumbo. Different images show the lady fondling and kissing him while he was asleep. In one, she’s seen licking his tattoo.

Sources say Sonia, a Port-Harcourt based Nigeria who’s currently studying in Ghana had used the images as display pictures on her Blackberry Messenger. Some of her contacts must have picked it up.

Now, they’ve found their way to social networking sites, causing a major frenzy.

Davido had travelled to Ghana along with his manager Asa Asika and crew member Sinarambo where he performed at Miss ISA 2012 beauty pageant put together by the International Students Association, of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.
